After Hours Church Safety

As the church secretary, I am frequently the only person in our building. What can I do to stay safe, even though I need to keep the door open to the church during office hours?

A church where I was receptionist had a separate office entry door, which opened to a small lobby with sitting room. On the back wall of the lobby, the church office itself had another door, leading from the lobby into the office, which could be locked, and a sliding window overlooking the receptionist desk, which could also be locked. That way, visitors could come up to the window, the receptionist could unlock it and slide it over, or choose to leave it locked and speak through the window. Hope this helps!

When I was completely alone in our church and also felt vulnerable with the doors unlocked, our property management team solved the problem by purchasing a remote door bell. It operates on batteries and the door bell is glued to the glass on our door. You can buy them at any home/building supply store. I keep the door locked whenever I am alone. If someone comes to the door, they just ring the doorbell. I can see who is at the door and unlock it if I feel comfortable. It sure beats having someone come up behind you when you think you're alone in the building! Our insurance carrier also appreciated this because it reduced our risk.
