Question:
Is the church responsible for its board members' actions?

Answer:
The church is bound by the actions of its board, assuming those actions were taken following proper procedures such as pursuant to the church's bylaws or constitution, and were undertaken as a proper function of the board. So, if the board approved a vendor contract to lease a copier, the church is probably responsible. Even if the board acted without authority, the church might still be responsible under what is known as apparent authority. Apparent authority means that the person dealing with the church through the board reasonably believed that the board had authority to act on behalf of the church.

Our Sr. Pastor was appointed another pastorial position and the church decided they would pay for the food and provide the catering of it and it would buy the ring that is associated with the title of the new position. is this a okay practice since the church decided to do this.

Should a church member be in charge of choosing the church board members or should the Church Administrator and the Pastor select and interview the members?

At Christmas time our local association ask our church to host their Annual Christmas Party . They collect a set amount of money from each person attending and turn that money over to the host church for that year. The host church can have the meal catered or they can cook it themselves or have a covered dish. When our pastor presented this to us at council he stated how one church had used the remaining funds after expenses to the lottie moon offering. I've now discovered that he and his wife decided without asking the church to use the church fcilities and cater the meal themself , retaining any remaining funds for their personal use. I've stated this is not allowed and at least the church should show something on the W-2 as income for this. The Deacons don't want to. If I sign the 2010 W- 2 statement to IRS , does this not make the church liable.
