This incident in FL is a terrible tragedy and it is our hope a prayer that she recovers completely. It is a cliche, but remember guns don't hurt people any more than matches cause arson. Guns aren't stupid, people are stupid. The irony of the family friend showing Hannah's boyfriend the "safety features" of the gun in a closet of the Church is overwhelming. Obviously the "closet" was not a safe enough location to be manipulating a loaded gun, remembering safety rule #1 is the gun in ALWAYS loaded and thus should ALWAYS (unless engaged with a viable threat) be pointed in a designated safe direction that is defined as 'if the weapon were to fire, there would be no injury or death and minimal property damage' in this case point the weapon down or at an exterior concrete wall. I just can't reconcile that anyone who would qualify for a concealed carry license would have no better concept of gun safety than to allow something like this to happen.

RE: Article on concealed handguns in church, the gun did not "fire", rather someone "fired" it. We reduce safety when we disregard responsibility. The problem is not the gun in the church but the fool in the church who did not (a) check the chamber and (b) demonstrate to the proposed buyer that the chamber was empty. This "accident" has been repeated so many times that we could fill a book with the news accounts. Since no one else seems to be doing it, maybe churches should provide gun safety classes. Make it a new outreach tool.

Safety & Security should be key elements of a church being a Good Steward of what the Lord provides & guides to it, both in the physical assets such as the building & improvements, the personal assets in the pastor & staff as well as the new Believers. The Bible tells us taht the Shepherd is there to protect, guide and provide for his flock and having a plan in place, having teams to implement the plan and having the teams and membmers practice the plan is the only true assurance that you are prepared. Some say the lack of safety security planning is due to limited funds and the economy but since the church members can probably bring most of the training, experiences and skills, this should not be a reason not to have a plan & be prepared for a emergency. The recent announcement that Church Security Network has cloaed due to a lack of support from churches is a sad example of the importance placed on safety security. A disaster, emergency or attack doesn't wait, they just show up.
