Simple Tips to Child-Proof Your Church

Safeguard your church with these simple tips.

By taking these simple safeguards to heart and putting them into practice, you will have reduced the potential for children to get harmed in any way at your church—whether during a special event, a holiday, or any time of year.

Safety First

Create a Safety and Security Team. The benefits of having this sort of team will take some pressure off of the rest of your volunteers. The Safety and Security Team should inspect the area your activity will take place in to make sure there is nothing that can hurt a visiting child. They will also be at the event to watch for potentially dangerous situations.

Keep an eye on the nursery. Because the nursery is used on a regular basis, not only during special events, nursery works should be responsible for looking over the rooms before any children are admitted.

Keep potentially dangerous objects out of reach. Anything that could be swallowed, touched, or spilled by a child that could be dangerous to their health should be kept in a storage place far off the ground. If you need to lock these objects away, please do so.

A High Standard of Care

Add more volunteers. If you're having a large event, it's a good idea to recruit more volunteers. The more children there the more likely your regular team of volunteers might miss something that could be a dangerous situation. The more volunteers there, the more eyes watching the children closely.

Roam the hallways. Have volunteers, maybe your ushers, specifically assigned to walk through the hallways during larger events. They should be checking secluded areas like bathrooms and dark classrooms for suspicious activity.
