A camp experience is only as successful as it is safe. Learn how you can improve your ministry camp experience—even if you're not on the trip. When campers aren't distracted by physical hazards or injuries, they are free to soak in the spiritual lessons of the day. Get started on creating a safe camp experience today with our simple tips.

About the Camp
  • Counselors count. Ask how the camp screens and trains their staff. Training should include camp policies, behavior guidelines, emergency procedures, and abuse prevention and reporting.
  • Check camp credentials. Find out if the camp is a member of a recognized organization. This may signify commitment to excellence and access to additional safety resources.
  • High-risk, higher stakes. Reaching today's youth often involves engaging in adventurous activities. Be sure the camp is experienced in sponsoring and supervising any high-risk activities they offer.
  • Get references. If you are considering a new camp, ask if you can contact other ministries who have attended. Better yet, see if you can attend the next parent's day, where many camps review the activities of the prior week.
Before You Go
  • Check the forecast. Understand that health risks shift with the weather—which can change quickly. Make sure campers are prepared for weather changes and understand the signs of overexposure to heat or cold.
  • Pack a first aid kit. Pack and send a first aid kit with campers. While the camp should be well-prepared for emergencies, you may encounter hazards on the way.
  • The bus stops here. Consider hiring a charter bus service for travel to activities and events. While there is additional cost involved, these may be offset by the safety factors of larger vehicles and experienced drives.
