Simple Tips for Safe Recreational Facilities

Make your hot spot for activities and fellowship a low-risk zone.

Every wonder if your ministry 'rec' room is a potential wreck room? Your ministry can avoid safety hazards and risks by using caution when planning activities, purchasing equipment, and choosing insurance coverage. Take steps to make your facility comfortable, accessible, and safe for young and old alike with our simple tips.

Be Aware

Hit the ground running. Although gymnasiums can be a great facility within the church for people in the community to gather and have fun, watch out for insurance risks and hazards. Rec rooms can be an accident-prone area where athletes can literally hit the ground—and churches can get hit with the medical bills.

Check out the outsiders. When allowing guests to use your recreational rooms, make sure you check their insurance coverages. You don't want to be liable for another group's injuries or accidents that occur on your property.

The experts agree. When installing a playground or recreational facility, trust the manufacturers and their attention to safety. Be aware of padding around equipment, space available, and purchasing appropriate-sized equipment for your space.

Take Initiative

Get approved. Before you start an activity program using your recreation area, make sure you have adequate insurance coverage. A baseball/softball league, dance group, or exercise program poses potential risks to participants for which you ministry can be held liable.

From the floor up. A durable, comfortable, safe floor is the foundation of a low-risk gymnasium where ministry can occur. Build your recreational room with particular attention to the flooring you choose.

Use that bus. Keep up participation in activities by providing transportation to older members of your congregation. These potential participants may be discouraged to take part in evening activities if it means driving to or from the church in the dark.

Play safe. You have the ability to reach out to your community by providing a place to play. Make sure that place is safe and healthy for members of the community of all ages.
