Simple Guide to Workers' Compensation

What churches need to know about workers' compensation
Tyler Charles | posted 10/11/2011

Here are some basic principles about workers' compensation, including what it can offer and who is and isn't covered:

What Can Workers' Compensation Cover?
  • Payments for medical expenses. Workers' compensation offers payment toward medical expenses and rehabilitation.

  • Cash. For those who are unable to work, workers' compensation provides regular payments to account for lost wages.

  • Survivorship benefits. In the event of a fatality, workers' compensation may provide a burial allowance and regular payments to surviving family members to account for the lost wages of the deceased party.
Workers' Compensation for Employees and Volunteers
  • Coverage for all staff members. In most states, churches are required to offer workers' compensation coverage to full-time and part-time employees, including the pastor.

  • Volunteers rarely qualify for workers' compensation. In most states, volunteers are not eligible for worker's compensation.
