Simple Tips to Protect Your Volunteer Workers

Provide a safe working environment for these indispensible volunteers.
posted 6/02/2008

Churches rely on the generosity of volunteer workers to get things done.  You owe it to them to provide a safe working environment.  Reduce the risk of an accident by following our simple tips.

Injury Prevention
  • Appoint a safety supervisor. Designate a qualified individual for every project. The supervisor should monitor the site for hazards, provide training on the tools involved, and promote safe work practices.

  • Encourage proper lifting techniques. Back injuries can strike workers of any age.  Demonstrate proper lifting techniques for any volunteers whose work involves manual labor.

  • Climb the ladder of success. Many everyday volunteer tasks involve climbing ladders—from painting to cleaning gutters.  Follow the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) guidelines for ladder maintenance and proper use.

On the Job
  • You want me to do what? Fill out a work detail form that describes the job—including any special safety precautions.  Discuss the form with your volunteer workers.  They will be more confident and efficient in their work and less likely to interrupt employees with questions.

  • Supervise teenage volunteers.  Set clear guidelines on what tasks teenage volunteers can perform.  Monitor their work on a regular basis and address any safety issues immediately.

  • Share the load.  Find creative ways to get more people involved so the same volunteers aren't called on to do all of the work. You will build a larger pool of workers and help to avoid volunteer burnout.

  • Stock your first aid kit.  Anticipate injuries and stock your first aid kit accordingly. Place the kit in a convenient location and follow standard first aid procedures for treatment to protect the worker from further injury and the first aid provider from exposure to health risks.
