Road travel is routine for most of us and we often take safety for granted. Church trips are no exception. Safety on the road doesn't happen without planning that starts well before the driver gets behind the wheel. Use our simple tips for safe travel and reduce the likelihood of accidents.
Before You Travel- Screen your drivers. Set standards for regular and occasional church drivers. Verify that the drivers meet your requirements through use of a screening form, references, and a driving history background check as appropriate.
- Inspect the vehicle. Perform a thorough inspection of any vehicle used for church travel—regardless of whether you own it. Keep a log of all inspection dates and related maintenance or repairs completed.
- Consider a cell phone policy. Consider adopting a cell phone policy that restricts the driver's use of a cell phone while driving. Have your policy reviewed by an attorney to make sure if complies with local and state laws.
- Be prepared. Bring a travel kit customized for each trip. Consider the length of the trip, the age of the passengers, and the weather forecast for the duration of the trip as you pack your kit.
- Use safety restraints. Use age-appropriate safety restraints and seating arrangements on every trip. Set an example by always wearing a seat belt.
- Handle with care. Take extra precautions when handling a 15-passenger van. Avoid sudden maneuvers and have fewer than 10 occupants to reduce the risk of rollover. Carefully load the van starting from the front seat and never load anything on the roof.
